Criminal Law
Criminal law is the body of law which prohibits a number of actions or neglects that may threaten and/or harm a person or his/her property or the public safety and welfare in general.

In Cyprus the main body of criminal legislation is the Criminal Code, Cap.154 but there are also various other legislations which prohibit various other specific activities or neglects (e.g legislation against drugs and firearms).

The crimes in Cyprus are separated to felonies and misdemeanors. Offences which are punishable with up to 5 year imprisonment are dealt by the District Court and all other more serious offences are dealt by the Assize Court.

There are also criminal courts which try only cases related to traffic offences and private criminal cases (e.g. issuing of blank cheques, offences related to buildings and structures and other).
